How Much Food Do You Need for a Grazing Table? An Updated & Simple Guide for Your Next Event | Riverside CA
I’m having about 50 people. How much food do I actually need?”
We get some version of this question all the time.
And usually, the real question isn’t actually how big should my grazing table be?
It’s:
Will everyone have enough to eat?
You want it to look beautiful. You want your guests to be able to grab a plate, mingle and come back for more. Maybe you don’t want a formal sit-down dinner at all.
But you also definitely don't want 50 hungry people staring at a beautiful table that ran out of food 45 minutes into your party.
So, how much do you order?
Here’s the easiest way to figure it out.

Don't Start With the Size of the Grazing Table
Start with one question:
What job does the food need to do at your event?
Because feeding 50 people for a one-hour cocktail hour before dinner is VERY different from feeding 50 people at a three-hour party where the grazing table is dinner.
Same 50 people.
Completely different amount of food.
We usually break it down into three really simple categories.
1. “I Just Need Something for Everyone to Snack On.”
This is light grazing.
Your guests can make a small plate, grab a few bites and mingle, but you're not expecting the grazing table to feed everyone dinner.
This works really well when you already have more food coming later.
Maybe you're serving dinner after cocktail hour.
Maybe there's a food truck coming.
Maybe you're bringing out tacos, pizza or late-night food later in the evening.
In that case, your grazing table doesn't need to do all the heavy lifting.
You might have a beautiful mix of artisan cheeses, charcuterie, fresh fruit, seasonal vegetables, dips, breads, crackers, crostini and a few small bites.
Everyone gets something to eat, your table looks beautiful when guests arrive, and you're not paying for a full meal when you don't actually need one.

2. “I Don't Want to Serve Dinner, But I DO Want People to Have Enough Food.”
This is where your graze gets more filling.
This is where a lot of our clients land.
You want people eating throughout the party.
You want them to make a decent plate.
You want them to be able to come back for more.
But you don't necessarily want everyone sitting down at the same time for a traditional dinner.
So instead of just adding more cheese and crackers, we start adding foods that actually make the spread more filling.
Think:
Cheeseburger or fried chicken sliders
Bourbon meatballs
Croissant sandwiches
Chicken & waffle bites
Seasonal salads
Crostini
Skewers
Other savory small bites
You still get that beautiful grazing-table centerpiece, but now your guests have enough variety to build a fuller plate.
This works especially well for birthdays, showers, fundraisers, corporate events and cocktail-style parties where you want everyone moving around, talking, eating and enjoying the party.

3. “Nope. This IS Dinner.”
Okay...now we're feeding people! 😂
If your grazing table is the main food for the event, we plan it like the main food for the event.
That means more quantity, more filling selections and enough variety for your guests to make a full plate and come back for seconds.
You still get the relaxed experience of a grazing table, nobody has to stand in a traditional buffet line or sit down for a plated meal, but your guests should leave feeling like they actually ate dinner.
Pretty is important. Full guests are also important.
We plan for both.
Okay, But What If I Have 30, 50, 75 or 100 Guests?
This is where people usually want us to give them one magic number.
Unfortunately, there isn't one.
Let's say you're having 50 guests.
Party #1
Your guests arrive at 5 PM.
There's a grazing table during cocktail hour.
Dinner is served at 6:30.
You probably need light grazing.
Party #2
You're having 50 people over for a three-hour fundraiser.
There's no formal dinner, and you want people eating and mingling throughout the evening.
You need more food and more filling options.
Party #3
You're having 50 people for a birthday party.
The grazing table will be the main food when everyone arrives, but you're bringing out street dogs and Mexican street corn later in the evening.
You probably land somewhere in between.
Same guest count.
Three completely different orders.
That's why simply Googling “What size grazing table do I need for 50 people?” doesn't always give you a very useful answer.
Here's What We Actually Need to Know From You
You don't need to know catering terminology.
You don't need to calculate ounces of cheese per person.
And you definitely don't need to figure out whether you need 74 sliders and 112 pieces of crostini before you contact us.
We just need to know:
How many people are coming?
How long is your event?
Are you serving any other food?
And:
Do you want everyone to snack, make a fuller plate, or actually eat a meal?
That's it.
From there, we can help you figure out what makes sense.
Wait... What Exactly IS a Grazing Table?
If you've seen one on Instagram or Pinterest but aren't totally sure what you're booking, here's our simplest explanation:
It's one big, beautiful food display that also becomes a centerpiece for your event.
Your guests walk up, grab a plate, choose what they want, go mingle and come back when they're ready for another bite.
And it doesn't have to mean just meat and cheese.

Your grazing spread can include traditional charcuterie, fruit and vegetables, or we can build it into something much more filling with sliders, sandwiches, salads, crostini, appetizers, small bites and even desserts.
That's why we care so much about knowing how you want people to eat before we tell you what to order.
“I Just Want It to Look Pretty and Make Sure Everyone Has Enough to Eat.”
Perfect.
Seriously.
You can send us almost exactly that.
You don't have to know whether you need a four-foot table or a six-foot table.
You don't have to decide how many appetizers everyone should get.
You don't have to build the menu yourself.
Tell us:
“I'm having 50 people. I want it to look beautiful. I don't want a formal dinner, but I want everyone to have enough food.”
Now we know what problem we're solving.
We'll help you determine how much food makes sense, what kind of grazing setup fits your event and which menu selections will give your guests the experience you're actually picturing.
Because catering your event shouldn't require you to become a caterer first.
